Marcel Proust’s questions with Evgeni Plushenko
ISM: What is the most important trait of your character?
Evgeni: I’m very goal-oriented, I achieve my goals, I like to work. I take myself serious. If something doesn’t work out, you have to finish it, you have to force yourself. I’m asking a lot of myself, but I think it helps.

ISM: What qualities do you appreciate in your friends?
Evgeni: My friends are loyal, honest and good. I have a lot of friends. They always help me when it is necessary with words and they’re always there when I need them. I wish the same for everyone else.

ISM: Where do you see your weakness?
Evgeni: Weakness... Sometimes I’m not too much controlled in practice. I can shout and get mad at myself. I think you can call this a weakness.

ISM: What is your favourite profession?
Evgeni: Figure skating is my profession without any doubt, because I dedicated my whole life to figure skating. This is my life, my passion, my favourite thing. When I’m leaving skating, I’ll probably look for another profession, for a new occupation. Of course, I’m not leaving skating for now.

ISM: What is your dream of happiness?
Evgeni: My dream just has been fulfilled; it is the Olympic gold medal. Happiness are my beloved wife, my family, my parents, and the greatest happiness is if everyone is healthy. If my family is healthy, I’m fine.

ISM: What would be the biggest misfortune?
Evgeni: Misfortune… Until now I can’t imagine to be without my parents.

ISM: What do you want to be?
Evgeni : I became what I wanted to be. I’m a good athlete. I brought some things into figure skating. I’m proud of that and I’m happy with it. So I guess I became what I wanted to be.

ISM: – In which country do you want to live?
Evgeni: I want to live in Russia, in St. Petersburg. Everything there works for me. I like it there. I think St. Petersburg and its architecture are beautiful, and the only thing that I don’t like is the fact that we don’t have nice weather! But I’m feeling comfortable there, my friends are living there, it’s my home. St. Petersburg is my city.

ISM: What is your favourite colour?
Evgeni: In general I prefer dark colours. But I don’t really have favourite colour. For cars, I only like black. But apart from that… I’m not picky, and if a colour looks good on me, I’ll wear it.

ISM: Who are your idols?
Evgeni: My idol in figure skating is Viktor Petrenko. Outside of the sport, there is nobody whom I strive to follow and there are no idols. I always wanted to be myself.

ISM: What kind of music do you like to listen to?
Evgeni: All kinds of music. I like chansons, pop, hip hop, I’m sometimes listening to classical music. I’m not picky again, I can listen to anything, but I don’t like hard rock.

ISM: What do you hate?
Evgeni: – I hate getting up early and going to practices. And there you have to skate and to skate well! That’s why I don’t like it. I like sleeping!

ISM: What talent would you like to have?
Evgeni: To be honest, I’m not perfect, but I’m happy and grateful that God gave me a talent and respect for my parents and elder people. So I think I just want to stay the person that I’m now.

ISM: What is your motto?
Evgeni : To go forward and never take a step back. You always have to go forward and to achieve the goals that you set for yourself.

ISM: If you meet God one day, what would you like him to tell you?
Evgeni : If I meet him one day, his words would be so personal and just for myself, and therefore it’s not right to talk about that.

Viktoria Pavuk change coach
The second Hungarian athlete, not keeped promise, also because of several accidents, after the disappointing results obtained during the just ended season (23rd in Turin and out of the long program in the World Championships in Calgary) decided to abandon her long date coach Szabolcs Vidrai. From the next season she will be trained by her older sister, former athlete of figure skating and ice dancing.
Patricia, tree years older than the more known Victoria, obtained some results in minor international competitions during the season 2001/2002 in pair with Andras Rosnik, and she performed in some ice shows, but she has no experience of high level training.
Victoria claims that anyway she trusts her sister, she believe in her coach's ability and in the team that will collaborate with her.
The young skater does not charge her former coach with the failures, but she seems to take a big part of responsibility. Anyway she decided for the change in common agreement with Szabolcs.
Victoria seems to chose her sister also because of a lack of valid alternatives in the ice rink where she currently trains. The skater will continue to make stages in Canada, but she doesn't want to move to a foreign country because she also want to go on with her University studies in Phisycal Culture.
The question about the real preparation of a coach without any habit to international amateur's competitions is still open, but we all hope that Victoria will soon at least return to approach that 4th place that she obtained during Home's European Championships in 2004.

Elena Liashenko made a decision !!
After taking part in four Olympic Games, Elena Liashenko made a decision : her amateur career is definetively over. Elena is 30 years old and she wants to do something else, even though she could keep on skating in ice shows. She joined the Senior category in 1994 for the European Championships in Copenhague and then she took part in all ISU major events. She also may turn coach.

The « Quad King » is leaving !
After four wonderful and intense years, one of the best of figure skating history, Timothy Goebel decided to leave amateur career. Bronze medallist in the Olympics 2002, silver medallist in 2003, Goebel missed the qualifications for the Worlds 2004. He ranked only 10th in Moscow last year. He even missed the qualifications for Torino Olympic games. During his career, Timothy Goebel landed a total of 76 quads in ISU competitions, therefore he was named « Quad King ». Tim intends to finish college and coach on a part-time basis. In addition to school and coaching, Goebel hopes to become a technical specialist in skating's new judging system.

Did Leung change her coach ?
Mira Leung, the hardworking skater of Torino who never missed a practising session during the Olympics, is no longer training under Joanne Mcleod. There is no indication as to the reason the split happened or who Leung will now be coached by but the « Vancouver Sun » is speaking about disagreements over training for the next four years in preparation for the Vancouver Olympic games. Elvis Stojko told that she had everything to be a champion and we know that Mira is very ambitious because her aim is to win a gold medal in Vancouver and at least, one gold medal in a World Championships. May Stojko be her next coach ?

Ladies, Free Skating
Surprisingly, Meissner (USA) skated to victory in what was her first World Championships. Japan’s Fumie Suguri captured the bronze medal while Sasha Cohen (USA) settled for the bronze.

Meissner, who stood in third place following the Short Program, put out the skate of her life. The 16-year-old nailed a triple flip-triple toeloop combination, a double Axel, a triple Lutz-triple toeloop, a triple loop, Lutz, Salchow and a double Axel-double toeloop-double loop combination in her program to “Belkis, Queen of Sheba”. She hadn’t finished yet her final element, a flying sit spin, when the crowd rose to their feet to give her a standing ovation. Meissner also was awarded all level threes for her spins, spirals and steps and a level four for her combination spin. The 2004 World Junior silver medallist picked up 129.70 points (69.47 element score/60.23 program score), clearly surpassing her previous personal best of 113. 84 points and accumulating a total competition score of 218.33 points.
Suguri’s lyrical program set to Sergei Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto featured a triple Lutz-double toeloop combination, a triple flip, another triple Lutz, a triple toeloop, a double Axel-double toeloop as well as beautiful spins. Her only mistakes came when she doubled the Salchow and stepped out of the second jump in her triple flip-double toeloop combination. The 25-year-old Japanese scored 119.15 points (58.86/60.29) and remained in second place at 209.74 points.
Overnight leader Sasha Cohen had drawn to skate first in the final group. The Olympic silver medallist started strongly into her romantic “Romeo and Juliet” program, hitting a triple Lutz-double toeloop, a triple flip and a triple loop, but then she seemed to loose focus, stumbling out of her second triple flip and two-footing the triple toeloop and double Axel. When she fell on her last jump, a triple Salchow, she knew that the gold had eluded her one more time. Cohen produced excellent spins and spirals, earning a level four for each of them and received 114.67 points (54.32/61.35). She dropped from first to third with a total of 208.88 points...
